چکیده

Large-scale simulation of the soil-derived dust emission in semi-arid regions needs to account for the in ̄uence of the soil moisture on the wind erosion threshold. Soil water retention consists of molecular adsorption on the soil grain surface and capillary forces between the grain. Interparticle capillary forces (characterized by the moisture tension) are the main factor responsible for the increase of the wind erosion threshold observed when the soil moisture increases. When the soil moisture content is close to but smaller than the maximum amount of adsorbed water, w¢ (depending on the soil texture), these capillary forces are considered as not strong enough to signi®cantly increase the erosion threshold. An expression of the moisture tension as a function of soil moisture and w¢ is derived from retention curves. From this expression, a parametrization of the ratio of the wet to dry erosion thresholds has been developed as a function of soil moisture and soil texture. The coecients of this parametrization have been determined by using experimental data from the literature. An empirical relationship between w¢ and soil clay content has been established. The erosion threshold ratios simulated for di€erent soil textures were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Analysis of the Effect of Wind Speed and Soil Moisture on Horizontal Visibility Variations Caused by Dust Event in Arid Regions (Study Region: Southeast of Iran)

Introduction: Increasing or reducing the production of suspended particles depends on the important climatic and terrestrial characteristics of a region. One of the most important climatic factors affecting soil erosion is wind speed, so if the surface winds speed in a region exceeds the threshold of erosion, soil susceptibility to erosion and dust production increases. In contrast, the most im...

Investigating the Effect of Land Use and Soil’s Physio-chemical properties on Wind Erosion Threshold Velocities via Data Mining

Introduction: Wind erosion is a phenomenon that causes severe environmental changes in arid and semi-arid climates. As surface soil texture is very effective in soil erodibility, identifying soil erodibility index is important and efficient. Mismanagement greatly contributes to the development of wind erosion. The velocity that makes the first particles of soil move from the surface is called t...

Extended abstract     1- Introduction     Climate change is one of the problems human is facing today, and most of the scientific societies know that it is rooted in the distribution of greenhouse gases. Distribution of greenhouse gases with large volumes and in large spans has been affecting the energy budget and consequently has caused earth rapid temperature increase during the last deca...

An improvement on the dust emission scheme in the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM5-HAM

Formulation of the dust emission scheme in the global aerosol-climate modeling system ECHAM5-HAM has been improved. Modifications on the surface aerodynamic roughness length, soil moisture and East-Asian soil properties are included in the parameterization, which result in a large impact on the threshold wind friction velocity for aeolian erosion and thus influence the simulated dust emission a...

The Protective Effect of Lichen in Maintaining Moisture and Modulating the Temperature Fluctuations of Soil Susceptible to Wind Erosion

Extended abstract   1- INTRODUCTION   Soil erosion is one of the most destructive processes of arid and semi-arid areas, which leads to desertification in a large area of the region. In windy areas, the wind in the region increases the probability of wind erosion. Soil moisture and soil temperature are the two effective factors in soil erosion control. Vegetation is also one of the effectiv...
